Kyoto in Autumn: A Foliage Itinerary by Area and Hour

We operate the Maiko & Zen Kyoto experience mentioned in this guide.

Leaves in Kyoto do not change color on one schedule, so group your stops by area and read each temple's page before you go. This guide does not predict color dates. It shows how to read what temples publish, then walks through a day step by step, with a south Kyoto route.

How to Read Foliage Timing Each Year

Color changes from year to year and from place to place. For that reason, rely on each temple's own page rather than a fixed calendar. Tofuku-ji says its autumn viewing dates and hours change every year. Kiyomizu-dera lists its 2026 autumn night viewing for Nov 21 to 30, and it also says those dates change every year.

Before you lock in a plan, open the official page for every stop and confirm the dates that apply to your trip. Then build the days around the stops that have the narrowest windows, and fill the rest with flexible gardens and walks.

Morning: Start Where the Gates Open Early

Begin with Kiyomizu-dera, which usually opens at 6:00 am. At Tofuku-ji, Tsutenkyo Bridge opens at 8:30 am between Nov 14 and Dec 6, and the Hojo gardens open at 9:00 am.

Tenryu-ji in Arashiyama lists early opening from 7:30 am on Nov 14 to 30, 2026, which makes it a natural first stop on a day in the west.

A train can be a simple way to link the southern temples. From Kyoto Station, the JR Nara Line reaches Tofukuji Station in about 3 minutes, and Tofuku-ji is then about 10 minutes on foot. Inari is the next station after Tofukuji, so Fushimi Inari and Tofuku-ji pair well on the same line.

If you prefer buses, a single Kyoto City Bus ride costs 230 yen for adults in the flat-fare zone. The Subway and Bus 1-Day Pass costs 1,100 yen for adults, so add up your rides first. Seasonal routes are excluded from the pass, so check its valid area before you count on it for a trip into the hills.

Afternoon: Later Hours and Evening Viewing

Plan afternoon stops around closing times, which change as autumn moves on. Sanjusangendo is open from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm until November 15, and from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm starting November 16, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Adult admission is 600 yen.

For an evening, check whether a temple runs a special night viewing. Kiyomizu-dera's autumn 2026 viewing is open from 6:00 am to 9:30 pm, with last entry at 9:00 pm.

Build a Plan That Can Bend

Treat the plan as a set of blocks rather than a fixed schedule. Pick one area for each half day, keep walking distances short, and leave a gap between stops for a meal or a rest on a bench. If a stop turns out to be less colorful than you hoped, you can drop it without breaking the rest of the plan.

Note which stops have a fixed end, and place everything else around them. A flexible block, such as a garden walk or a stroll between two temples, can then absorb delays. Carry a small umbrella, since a rainy afternoon can still be a good one among wet maple leaves and quiet paths.

One Day in South Kyoto

The south is easy to cover in a single day. Start at Fushimi Inari Taisha, which is right next to JR Inari Station and about 5 minutes from Kyoto Station on the JR Nara Line, then ride one stop back to Tofukuji Station.

At Tofuku-ji, spend your time on Tsutenkyo Bridge and the autumn color of the Sengyokukan ravine, and look for the gold leaves of the rare three-leaf maples. Budget for the season price: between Nov 14 and Dec 6, Tsutenkyo Bridge and Kaisando cost 1,000 yen for adults, and the combined ticket is not sold. Our Tofuku-ji temple guide has more on the grounds.

Keep a few temple rules in mind. During the autumn special opening, visitors may be asked not to take photos on Tsutenkyo and Gaun bridges. The temple asks visitors not to use tripods or to eat and drink on the grounds, and it does not allow re-entry. Its Treasure Tour is suspended from Oct 25 to Dec 16.

Planning the Afternoon

Tofuku-ji ticket sales end at 4:00 pm for most of the year, so see the temple in the morning, then add a quiet stop later in the day. To compare formats first, see our guide to maiko experiences in Kyoto.

See a maiko dance at a Zen temple. We operate Maiko & Zen Kyoto, a 90-minute session at Ikka-in, a sub-temple of Tofuku-ji, where a maiko dances in the same temple hall with no stage between you, then takes time for your questions and photos. See current session times and prices.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one date to plan around for the leaves?

It changes from year to year and from place to place, so no single date applies. Tofuku-ji, for example, says its autumn viewing dates and hours change every year, so check the official page for your dates.

Does Tofuku-ji cost more in autumn?

Yes. Tsutenkyo Bridge and Kaisando cost 1,000 yen for adults between Nov 14 and Dec 6, compared with 600 yen outside the autumn period.

Is a 1-day pass worth buying?

It depends on your route. The Subway and Bus 1-Day Pass costs 1,100 yen for adults and a single city bus ride costs 230 yen, so add up your rides first. Seasonal routes are excluded from the pass.

Can I take photos on Tsutenkyo Bridge in autumn?

During the autumn special opening, visitors may be asked not to take photos on Tsutenkyo and Gaun bridges. The temple also asks visitors not to use tripods.
